NAME 30

Nidhi means treasure and avyaya means imperishable. He is the imperishable treasure. This nāma does not mean the material wealth and the Brahman has no connection to material wealth. At the time of annihilation or the deluge, all the beings get absorbed into the Brahman till the next creation is made. All the beings take a sojourn at the time of annihilation in the Brahman. In spite of this, the Brahman does not undergo any modification or change and remains as It is. The souls take only a temporary shelter in the Brahman only during deluge. At the time of recreation, they are again born as per the karmic law. The Brahman absorbs the entire universe during His act of annihilation only to recommence His act of creation. This does not mean liberation for the souls. This stage is only a temporary respite for them. When the whole universe does not exist, He alone exists.

30. Om NidhiryeAvaya Namah

निधिरव्ययः nidhir-avyayah

AvyayahNidhih -The Imperishable treasure.

He who is never destroyed (even at deluge)

 The term Nidhi means ‘that in which precious things are stored away or preserved secretly’: (NidheeyateAsminitiNidhih). Therefore, He who is the substratum-container-for the entire universe is the Nidhi. During the dissolution (sleep) the One into Whom all things go to lie merged therein temporarily, till the next projection or creation (waking), as this Immutable Treasure Chest-the Vishnu. Here ‘unchangeable’ (Avyaya) is qualifying ‘Nidhi’.

Nidhiravyayaḥ

The indestructible receptacle.

Every word in the ViṣṇuSahasranāma is a window of insight, a window of understanding one more facet of the Lord. There are words which indicate our value for our valuables. Nidhiravyayaḥ is one such word. Nidhi, treasury is the place, the receptacle, where all that is valuable is preserved, treasured and kept secure. For most of us this would mean a secure locker whether at home or in the bank.

Here Bhagavān is called Nidhi, because pralaya āleasminsarvamnidhīyate–the entire world with all its precious things is placed in Him at the time of desolution. It is like keeping all the jewels in a locker, and bringing them out at the time of a wedding. Bhagavān also, at the time of creation brings back the entire world from the unmanifest. Even the Vedas come back.

A locker or a treasury, whether at home or in the bank is subject to changes like rusting or destruction (even banks are subject to earthquakes). That which was said as nidhi is avyaya. It means that the nidhi is always there. It is not lost nor does it change nor get destroyed. He preserves everything and does not lose anything.

When creation takes place, everything comes back again from the unmanifest to become

manifest. Nothing is expended and nothing is lost. That which is manifest, goes back into the unmanifest state. Just as one goes to sleep and again comes back from sleep, it is a cycle.

What doesn’t get destroyed even with death is your spiritual wealth. Swamiji says “Just like you save money, bit by bit and every penny adds up, similarly, every little act of kindness counts. Every small gesture of compassion boosts your spiritual savings.”
